How to add more features to your android app using JavaScript and CSS

Android apps are developed using the Java or kotlin languages but you can also code the apps main features using JavaScript and CSS. Most sophisticated mobile apps use this this technology. This article is about how you can also use the same web technologies to create an app which laden with cool features. There is an Android development feature called webview that you simply need to add to your app. This tutorial will be a walk in the park for web developers because it is basically turning a web app into a mobile app. I have created a video which shows you how to do it. This lesson introduces  an IDE called PhoneGap.  In the following article I shall post about how to use PhoneGap. Course Content

Going full manual

It is very important for a photojournalist to learn how to operate a DSLR camera in manual mode. This is because the automatic and even the preset modes like sport or macro sometimes fail to capture the photo correctly due to selecting wrong settings either for the shutter speed or aperture size. In manual mode , the photojournalist has control on what he want to achieve. The following is my experience when I first mastered the full manual mode.

As I was honing my skills on the DSLR camera. I was fascinated mostly by the full manual mode and I managed to gain some insight into the controls.

I learnt about how to use the light meter,  which appears on the LCD control panel after slightly depressing the shutter button. The light meter will show if the exposure is correct or not. Then exposure compensation is carried out depending on the number of stops appearing on the meter.

The ISO is another area which is interesting to explore. It is important to keep it low always when shooting as it …

Use your smartphone's camera like a pro

There are some settings in your camera app that can make a difference in your photography. Firstly there is the White Balance. You need to set it to suit the environment in which you are taking the photos. If it is in a shade or the main light source is florescent lights then you should set it accordingly.

Another important setting which you should be wary of is HDR , high dynamic range. Cameras have difficulty in capturing both areas of shadows and highlights at the same time. It can happen when shooting landscape photos or backlit subjects, for example someone sitting indoors with their back towards a window. Sunsets and cityscapes are also require HDR for perfect shot.

Next time you you face a scenario of both shadows an highlights just remember to activate HDR. When shooting under florescent light do not forget to change the White Balance accordingly. First use AWB that is auto White Balance. If the camera fails to render the scene perfectly then adjust the settings to specifically …

Every professional photographer needs a photo signature

Having an online presence is vital to reach out to a large audience. However you need to put up some measures to curb theft of your images. This is where a photograph signature comes into play.

Myphotosign.com has a free solution. Signatures can be very expensive. I remember coming across a company which provided the service for US$40. Once you get your signature you need to get a photo editor which supports watermarks. I understand that small businesses or photographers who are just getting started with establishing an online presence usually post their content using mobile devices. Therefore I shall dwell on apps for mobile phones. Photoshop app can allow you to add a watermark with much ease compared to other available options that I have tried.

Photojournalism for beginners

Definition
What is photojournalism?
Basically it is a style of photography. There are several styles of photography namely: landscape, portrait, wildlife, fashion, abstract/conceptual and war/photojournalism.

Photojournalism is a term which was coined several years ago. It is a combination of the words photography and journalism. In other words it means telling news using photos.

Styles of Photography
In order to specialize in a certain style one needs to learn the basics of the broader subject which in this case is photography.

History
To learn photography we start with its history. One needs to study the camera obscure and how it evolved into the cameras we see today. We can not talk of cameras without mentioning the actual images be it in print form or digital form.  In 1827 the first permanent photo was developed using the deguerro type method.

Types of Cameras
From the history of photography we move on to camera types and components (lens, mirror, viewfinder, shutter, image sensor etc). T…

Is it possible to get DSLR effects on a smartphone?

Point and shoot cameras can not shoot photos with a shallow DoF (depth of field). This is because of their lenses which can not be adjusted to the aperture size suitable for blurring the background. An aperture size of less than 5.0 is required to shoot photos with blurred background.

Now with the auto blurring android app you can now take pictures with your phone and get the DSRL camera effect. You can achieve the same objective by using Photoshop for Android. However the process is not as easy and effective as by using the auto blurring app.

Grey cards and how to improvise

A grey card is important to carry on person if you are a professional photographer. Did you know that the inside material of most camera bags is middle grey. They reflect 18% of light!

I was practicing taking photos one day when I came across the idea. I looked around for an item with a grey colour I could use to adjust my meter and it happened that my camera bag was nearby and the grey colour of the inside lining looked just perfect. I tried it and it worked!

I went on to Google my findings online to find if anyone  else backed my discovery. I read on Reddit that it is a well known fact among professional photographers, the manufacturers deliberately make the bags grey inside. I was elated! Now I can carry my bag around whenever I want to take photos until I buy a grey card.

How to create a simple android app

I am going to create a simple news reader app for Android using the Android Integrated Development Environment (AIDE) as I demonstrate how to code using just a mobile device anywhere you are i.e  Coding On The Go.
I blog about mobile apps which are best for writing and compiling code on smartphones. I also conduct tutorials on how to use those apps as well as some online tools inorder to help coders successfully develop and publish apps using mobile devices. #codingonthego — Coding OTG (@codingotg) July 25, 2019
The app is a news reader which displays news articles from various local news blogs. First we need to search for RSS feeds of the news blogs. The most popular news sites in Zimbabwe are: Hmetro, Newsday, Herald and TechZim. I shall also add my personal blog.

Secondly we create a layout for our app using AIDE.

What you will learn in this lesson:

1.  How to use a relative layout in AIDE.
2. List views
3. Menu
4. Toasts
6. Splash screen
7. App permissions

Is it possible to get AdSense approval on Blogger?

I used to think it was impossible for a Blogger user to get AdSense approval until I came across a blog which displayed adverts from Google Ad display network. It was also a local, Zimbabwean, website and I was mesmerized. I learnt a lot from this blog and I would like to share with you my findings on how to get AdSense approval on Blogger.
Unique Content
You must come up with original and unique content. Find your niche and blog about the topics you like the most. It might seem challenging at first but once you get the hang of it you will be able to cope. To identify the areas you need to focus on you can start by posting random topics and then use Google Analytics to see which post performed better and you can concentrate on such areas.

How to resize your images online

When to resize images
There a lot of scenarios in which you might find yourself in need of resizing an image. Different platforms call for different image sizes for a perfect look. Take for example Twitter, you might need to display a banner or to post a picture and in order for your image to display well showing all the details without being cropped , you have to provide an image with the right dimensions.

Coders also face the same challenge when creating a store listing for their app in Google play store. There is a solution online. Remember , coding on the go is about developing apps wherever you are and this means you might not be on your computer. Therefore you need to access resources on your mobile and the best place to find them is online.

How to create Icons for android online

Icons are required when developing an app for publishing. Most Integrated Development Environments like AIDE have default icons . However you need your app to look professional and marketable and therefore you have to create your own set of icons for the particular project you will be working on. To achieve that  professional look , you need to create beautiful icons which appear on all devices without distortion or pixelation. Mobile devices come in different dimensions and therefore you are required to create an icon for your app in several sizes to suit the wide range of mobile devices on the market. Here at Coding On The Go , recommend that you create your icons online. There are several websites which offer that service. You can request , via email, a link to the website which we think is the best. Most websites let you upload a file that you would have created from any image editing software like Adobe Sparks or Canva and then allows you to download a zip file of the icon in diffe…

Which Integrated Development Environment to use when coding using a smartphone?

What is an IDE?
An integrated development environment is required to code, debug, run and compile apks. An IDE comes with an inbuilt text editor. The installation size is huge and the app can slow down your mobile device, therefore when it comes to coding on the go, most developers prefer using a simple text editor. Most programming languages can be written with ease using just a text editor. Android is currently an exception as there is no text editor which can highlight syntax errors or auto complete statements for the Android code except for those parts where Java  or Kotlin appears.
What is the best IDE for use on smartphones?
The best IDE we have tried so far is AIDE. It is available in the Google play store for free and there is also a paid version which has more features that are not available in the free version. The paid version gives you the ability to save large files and to publish apps among other features. There are several other IDEs but we recommend AIDE.

Text Editors for writing code on mobile devices

How to choose a text Editor There are several text editors for Android. Choose the one which is best for you. The best text editor is decided by the features that it has to offer. Let me list them.
What makes a good text editor? You must be able to type and save your text files without the app crashing. HTML preview is an advantage if you are writing HTML code. It saves you time as there will be no need to open the phone's browser which also needs to be refreshed and sometimes to be reset by clearing the cache in order to view recent changes to your HTML code. Syntax error highlighting is a great feature. It improves productivity and makes debugging a breeze. Indention is needed also to p…

Which app is best for 360 degree photos?

The street view app by Google is superb for creating 360 degree photos. However the app is incompatible with a lot of devices we tested and is not available for old versions of Android. The next best option is the Panorama 360 or simply P360 app for Android. It is not easy to use at first but once you get the hang of it you can easily master the creation of 360 degree photos or panoramas. We found that in order to shoot with ease you need to have adequate light, it must not be harsh or dim. It takes about eight shots to create a 360 degree photo. The app is great at seamlessly stitching the photos together. I look forward to reviewing the Google Street view app myself once I get a compatible device.

Social WiFi marketing

Social WiFi marketing and beacons are touchpoints which a business can use as part of its growth hacking strategy.

WiFi marketing is the easiest option so far in Zimbabwe. An example of a company in Zimbabwe which is using that technique is based in Harare near or in a building called Construction House.  I wish I had the name of the company to share with you, however, I heard about it in the news. it is reported that people are flocking to the place to access free wifi.

This is a marketing technique which is affordable and effective. As people interact often with your brand they develop more trust. Access to the wifi is limited per user and once a user reaches the time limit they will have to wait until the following day and therefore this will not incur you large bills for internet usage.

Free web hosting for all types of users.

Hostinger offers Free web hosting which supports back end integration. It is better than blogger and WordPress when it comes to web development. Ideal for developers to horn their skills.
Great for hosting a project for inclusion in a portfolio. They have two solutions. First one is 000webhost. You can check out my sample site. Shona Dictionary/ The other one is paid-hosting. I found it cheap although the control panel was not user-friendly. Maybe it was because i am accustomed to using Dreamhost.

You can turn your computer's monitor into a Tv

All you need is what is called a TV tuner. The device is available in Zimbabwe for a few dollars. To be continued....
